In New York a Francis Bacon triptych of Lucian Freud sold for
£89 million ($142 million) and a Jeff Koons sculpture Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for £36.7 million ($58.4 million) a world record for a living artist.
I think the dog is a bit of fun, in this video Jeff Koons talks about the series.
as for the Francis Bacon I find his work very disturbing I can understand he was reacting to the horrors if the Second World War but his work is not something I would want on my wall!!!
Mark Hudson in the Telegraph says:
Who would have thought that the highest price ever paid for a painting at auction would be for a triptych by an artist whose work is not by any conventional standard beautiful, who concentrates remorselessly on the dark side of existence, and whose personal life was a catalogue of voluntary violent sexual abuse? The answer is, just about everyone.
Nothing surprises me about how much someone is prepared to pay for a piece of art.
He also says
It’s a work that gives us two geniuses for the price of one.
A matter of opinion there, neither artists are to my taste but at the end of the day each to their own as the saying goes, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things wouldn’t it.
