16th Century in Europe

  • The 16th century saw artists taking their place in society
  • Dominated by a few Italian artists Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Raphael with the exception of Durer in Germany
  • Their influence was international due to printed accounts of their careers
  • Religious reform – Protestant reform in Northern Europe
  • The invention of printing was instrumental in spreading the writings of the reformers
  • Italian Renaissance art spread quickly but was only gradually accepted in Northern Europe
  • Italian Renaissance is associated with the Humanist movement
  • Dynastic families in England and France adopted the Italian Renaissance, most notably for the tomb of Henry VII and his wife in Westminster Abbey
